Is this tote actually food grade?

You cannot determine food-grade status by looking at a tote. You can, however, rule one out in about ninety seconds — and that is usually the more useful skill.

Food-grade is a property of the container's history, not its appearance. Appearance only tells you when to stop.

The ninety-second rule-out

  1. Smell the open top fitting. Any solvent, petroleum or chemical odour ends the inquiry.
  2. Look through the bottle wall at daylight. Yellow-brown staining or an oily sheen means industrial history.
  3. Check the sump for sediment. Food residue rinses; mineral and polymer residue cakes.
  4. Read the placard and any old labels. A ground-off label is a warning, not a convenience.
  5. Find the UN marking. No code, no regulated food service — regardless of how clean it looks.

What would make it food grade

  • A bottle moulded from FDA-compliant virgin HDPE resin, with no post-consumer content in the wall.
  • A documented last-contents declaration showing food or food-adjacent product only.
  • A validated cleaning — hot caustic, neutralisation, potable final rinse — with a certificate naming the cycle and operator.
  • A swab or rinse-water test result from a named lab, tied to the tote serial or wash lot.
  • An unbroken chain of custody from the previous filler to you.

The honest caveat

Many food manufacturers will not accept a reconditioned container for direct contact at all, and that is a legitimate policy. If your HACCP plan says virgin only, buy one-trip totes and stop negotiating with yourself.

Myths that cost people money

'The recycling triangle with a 2 means food grade.'

No. The resin code identifies the polymer (HDPE), not its suitability for food contact. Industrial and food-grade bottles carry the same code.

'A white bottle is food grade, a yellow one is not.'

Colour tracks UV exposure and additive packages more than contents. Plenty of pristine white bottles last held something you would never eat.

'If it is clean, it is food grade.'

Cleanliness is necessary and nowhere near sufficient. HDPE absorbs some organics; a solvent tote can look spotless and still be permanently unsuitable.

'Food grade is a one-time certification.'

It is a per-fill judgement. A food-grade tote that carries glycol once is an industrial tote from then on.

  1. Start from your own plan, not from the container. If the plan says virgin, the conversation is over and reconditioned is irrelevant however good it is.
  2. If the plan allows reconditioned, require the four documents by name in your purchase specification.
  3. Specify new gaskets and ask for the gasket certification if your plan needs it on file — gaskets are the component people forget.
  4. Ask whether you may audit the records on site, and whether they will still exist in three years. Seven-year retention is the answer you want.
