The floor loading calculation nobody runs
A full 275 gallon tote puts about 181 lb per square foot through a 48 × 40 inch footprint. Many mezzanines and older second floors are rated for 125. Check before you stage totes upstairs.
The measurements that only matter once you own one
- Outlet valve height
- 6–8 in above the pallet deck
- Usable discharge head
- About 40 in from fill line to valve on a 275
- Fill opening diameter
- 6 in (150 mm) buttress, 9 in on older units
- Forklift entry
- 4-way on composite and plastic pallets; 2-way on some steel
- Fork pocket height
- 3.5–4.5 in
- Clearance for valve access
- Allow 14 in in front of the outlet
- Gravity drain rate
- Roughly 25–40 gpm on water through a 2 in butterfly
- Residual heel after gravity drain
- 0.5–1.5 gal in the sump
Volume in every unit anybody has ever asked us for
Nominal capacity is what the container is called. Fill capacity is what it holds to the moulded line, and brim capacity is what it holds before it overflows — which is not a number you should ever design around.
| Container | US gallons | Litres | Imperial gal | Cubic feet | Brim capacity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 275 gal composite | 275 | 1,040 | 229 | 36.8 | ≈ 290 gal |
| 330 gal composite | 330 | 1,250 | 275 | 44.1 | ≈ 345 gal |
| 220 gal composite | 220 | 830 | 183 | 29.4 | ≈ 232 gal |
| 120 gal composite | 120 | 450 | 100 | 16.0 | ≈ 127 gal |
| 350 gal stainless | 350 | 1,325 | 291 | 46.8 | ≈ 360 gal |
| 450 gal stainless | 450 | 1,700 | 375 | 60.2 | ≈ 462 gal |
| 550 gal stainless | 550 | 2,080 | 458 | 73.5 | ≈ 565 gal |
| 55 gal drum | 55 | 208 | 46 | 7.4 | ≈ 57 gal |

What your product actually weighs in a container
Every published weight assumes water at 8.34 lb per gallon. Most things people put in a tote are not water, and the difference decides whether your forklift, your rack and your mezzanine are adequate.
| Product | Specific gravity | Full 275 gal gross | Full 330 gal gross | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Water | 1.00 | 2,420 lb | 2,890 lb | Baseline |
| Diesel / heating oil | 0.85 | 2,075 lb | 2,480 lb | Lighter, but a fire-code question |
| Vegetable oil | 0.92 | 2,235 lb | 2,670 lb | Needs hot caustic to clean out |
| Glycol (50% solution) | 1.04 | 2,510 lb | 3,000 lb | Stains the bottle permanently |
| Caustic soda 50% | 1.52 | 3,610 lb | 4,320 lb | Forklift capacity, not container strength |
| UAN 32 fertiliser | 1.32 | 3,150 lb | 3,770 lb | The most common overload we see |
| Corn syrup / HFCS | 1.40 | 3,330 lb | 3,990 lb | Discharge needs warmth |
| Sulphuric acid 93% | 1.83 | 4,320 lb | 5,180 lb | Dedicated container, always |
| Sodium hypochlorite 12.5% | 1.18 | 2,830 lb | 3,390 lb | Vented cap mandatory |
| Honey | 1.42 | 3,380 lb | 4,040 lb | Heat jacket for discharge |
- Floor loading, full 275
- ≈ 181 lb per square foot across the footprint
- Typical mezzanine rating
- 125 lb per square foot — check before staging upstairs
- Forklift capacity needed
- Rated at the extended fork position, not the mast
- Rack beam load
- Two full 275s per bay is ≈ 4,840 lb — confirm the beam rating
- Dense product warning
- Caustic or acid can put a single container over 4,000 lb
- Pallet jack limit
- Most manual jacks stop at 5,500 lb; fine for one, not for two
Why is the published height sometimes 46 in and sometimes 48?
Pallet type. A composite pallet, a full steel pallet and a one-piece plastic pallet are not the same thickness, and the difference runs up to two inches. If you are fitting a container under something, specify the pallet and measure the actual unit.
Is the footprint really 48 × 40 inches?
The pallet is. The cage usually overhangs the pallet by up to half an inch on each side, and a container that has taken a forklift strike can overhang more. For racking, plan on 49 × 41 and you will never be caught out.
How much clearance do I need in front of the valve?
Fourteen inches is the practical minimum for a hand on a butterfly handle plus a hose. If you are plumbing in a camlock, make it eighteen.
Can I calculate remaining volume from the outside?
On a natural HDPE bottle, yes, roughly — hold a light behind it and the level is visible. On a stained or painted container, no, which is why sight gauges are the most common retrofit we do.
