The triple rinse, done properly
Most 'triple rinsed' totes have been hosed three times. A real triple rinse is a procedure with a volume, a temperature, a contact time and a record.

A rinse you cannot document is a rinse that did not happen, as far as the next buyer is concerned.
The procedure
- Drain completely through the outlet valve, then invert or sump-pump the heel. Residue left in the sump defeats everything that follows.
- Rinse one: 10% of container volume (about 27 gal for a 275), agitated, drained through the valve so the valve body is rinsed too.
- Rinse two: same volume with the appropriate detergent or caustic at the temperature the residue requires. Contact time matters more than pressure.
- Neutralise if you used caustic or acid, and verify with a pH strip on the drain stream.
- Rinse three: clean water, drained through the valve. For food-grade release, use potable water and sample it.
- Dry with the cap off and the valve open. A sealed damp tote grows things.
- Record it: cycle, temperature, operator, date, tote serial.
When a triple rinse is not enough
- Absorbed organics. HDPE takes up some solvents and aromatics into the wall; no rinse recovers that. Rebottle or recycle.
- Polymerised residue. Resins, adhesives and cured latex do not rinse. They get cut out or ground up.
- Sugar films. These need heat; cold rinses leave a tacky layer that ferments later.
- Pesticides in restricted-use classes. The rinse may be fine and the container still cannot legally be resold.
Doing this yourself?
If you rinse on site, send us the records with the load. Documented rinses move your totes up a price band — often by more than the cost of doing the rinse.
What a cleaning record has to contain
| Field | Example | Why a buyer cares |
|---|---|---|
| Container serial or lot | IBC-24-0917 | Ties the record to the physical container |
| Date and time | 2026-03-14, 09:40 | Sequence against the last fill |
| Last contents and concentration | Propylene glycol, 40% | Determines whether the cycle was adequate |
| Cycle type | Cycle 2, hot caustic | The claim being made |
| Detergent or caustic used | NaOH 2% | Chemical compatibility with the next product |
| Temperature | 180°F | Sugar and fat films come off on a heat curve |
| Contact time | 22 minutes recirculating | The variable most often shortened |
| Neutralisation and pH | pH 7.4 on the drain stream | Evidence, not assertion |
| Final rinse water | Fresh potable, single pass | Food-grade releases depend on this line |
| Test result | Swab, lab name, method, pass | The only objective verification |
| Operator | Initials | Accountability |
- A record with no temperature and no contact time is a receipt for a wash, not a record of one.
- pH must be read on the drain stream, not on a sample from a bucket — a bucket tells you about the bucket.
- Keep records for seven years. Compliance documentation for containers has to outlive the containers.
- If you rinse on site, send these records with the load. A documented rinse often moves a container up a price band by more than the rinse cost.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much water does each rinse use?
The guide gives 10 percent of container volume per rinse, which is about 27 gallons for a 275-gallon tote. The rinse is agitated and drained through the outlet valve so the valve body is cleaned as well.
Why do I need to record my rinse?
A rinse you cannot document is treated as not having happened by the next buyer. The record should show serial, date, last contents, cycle, temperature, contact time, pH and operator, and the guide says documented rinses often raise a tote's price band.
When is a triple rinse not enough?
Rinsing cannot recover solvents absorbed into the HDPE wall, polymerised residue such as resins or cured latex, or sugar films cleaned with cold water alone. Restricted-use pesticide containers may also be illegal to resell even if the rinse is fine.
How should I dry a tote after rinsing?
Dry it with the cap off and the valve open. The guide warns that a sealed damp tote grows things, so let it breathe before closing it up or putting it into storage.
How long should I keep cleaning records?
The guide recommends keeping records for seven years, because compliance documentation has to outlive the containers. If you rinse on site, send the records with the load and ask the yard what documentation it needs through the contact form.
